5 Free Photo Sources for Your Blog or Website

There are many sources for free photos on the internet. And let’s face it, a majority of them hold vast banks of antiseptic, generic images. If you want pictures that are well-composed, and have both creativity AND attitude, then allow me to suggest five of my favorites.

The only caveat: except for two sources, these websites have no easy way to search by topic or keyword. You’ll have to go through them manually, or subscribe to their newsletters so new photos are delivered directly to your inbox.

Without further ado, here are my five personally recommended go-to sources for free photos:

Creative Commons Flickr Search http://search.creativecommons.org/
CC Search allows you to find Creative Commons-licensed photos on Flickr, which is always my first stop when looking for a photo.
Content: Everything from professional-level images to amateur snaps.
License: Photos are under Creative Commons licenses and typically need attribution. Some images might be usable for commercial projects. Always be sure to check the details of the license for each photo used!

Unsplash http://www.unsplash.com
Unsplash gives you 10 free photos every 10 days. They have an email newsletter that alerts you to new images. It’s worth your while to subscribe.
Content: They specialize in gorgeous scenery and landscapes, but every so often have tech gadgets.
License: Can be used for commercial purposes. No attribution needed.

Death to the Stock Photo http://deathtothestockphoto.com/
DTS gives you free photos every month via email. It’s like Christmas when their email arrives because the images are always fabulous.
Content: Good combo of scenery, objects, and people. Stylish, gorgeous, never boring or antiseptic.
License: Photos can be used in commercial projects.

IM FREE http://www.imcreator.com/free
IM FREE puts together stylish, beautiful photos under useful, curated categories.
Content: Gorgeous photos with style and character. Various subject matter, though the number of photos per category is somewhat limited.
License: No copyright restrictions. Can be used for commercial projects.

Gratisography http://www.gratisography.com/
Gratisography collects Ryan Mcguire’s personal photos and makes them available for anyone to use anywhere.
Content: Unique “stock” photos (scenery, people, objects, urban) with an attitude and a character you can’t find anywhere else.
License: No copyright restrictions. Can be used for commercial projects.

  1. I thought of including it, but found a lot of the images to be sort of generic and boring? The other sources I pointed out have much more character. 😉
